Department of Biotechnology, Government of India recently concluded a very special event – the official Nobel Prize Series, 2019 – at one of its premier institutes NABI at Mohali, and Punjab Agricultural University in Ludhiana. The series organized talks on Teaching and Learning, a theme inspired by personal experiences of many Nobel Laureates about how teachers motivated them towards literature, politics and science. Two Nobel Laureates, Mr. Kailash Satyarthi (Peace, 2014) and Dr Serge Haroche (2012, Physics) were part of the inaugural function.
The series also featured a Nobel Museum exhibition that was aimed at school and college students which showcased the discoveries that helped make the world a better place. The exhibition was open from 12th September 2019 to 11th October 2019 and used videos, models, exhibits and guided tours to generate public awareness about the great issues that humankind is facing.
While there is a perpetual debate regarding why India do not win the coveted prize that is proportionate to her population, another person of Indian origin Dr Abhijit Banerjee won the Nobel Prize in Economics on 14th October 2019 just three days after the conclusion of the Nobel Museum exhibition here in India.
